Three Strikes

Recommended Posts

Well, after acclimating for 6 hours with periodic stirring, I've found that all three of the Tangiers flavors that I got, Brambleberry, Horchata, and Orange Soda, I cant get any of them to smoke well. Used lots of big fat holes. Used 3 pieces of japanese coals spread all over the bowl, over filled the bowl, all the advice I've been given to work with. Cant get any of these flavors to smoke right. Even if I dont have much heat, the bowl is harsh. Just cant handle it I guess. I'm really tempted to put all three flavors up for trade.

What do you guys think?

The best visual cue to having Tangiers smoking correctly is, in the base, the smoke should be nice and milky but you must still be able to see the downstem well. If it is hard to make out, there is too much heat. With this harshness, I'm assuming it is not necessarily as harshness but a heavy feel that cannot be inhaled much with possible coughing? For that, it means too much heat. What bowl are you using? With standard bowls, I use two tablets of Japs or two 3/4" pieces of naturals. Try using two and then adding a third if there isn't much happening after 5 min with two. Acclimating is the general fail safe but you did for six.... Make sure you are acclimating in the environment you'll be smoking it in with absolutely no fluctuations in temp meaning be wary of any air vents nearby or a leaky window. Keep at it, it is SO worth it in the end.

i can guarantee 100% that youre underpacking it....this is without a doubt.

once i saw eric pack the bowls in person, i got it smoking perfectly.

i had a post where i took pictures and explained how i do it. try to find that if its still up.

Any different shisha than Tangier can get harsh if you underpack it?

Not really. Tangiers has a very high nicotine content and it goes under humidity shock when exposed to unfamiliar air. I guess that happens when it's hand made in batches of 2 kilos.

Bulldog, next time I'm up in Sac I'll bring some tangiers up along with my hookah setup and show you how to pack a bowl. That is if you want. I may be up there around Easter time.

mdl, bro, if you want to show me how it's done, I'd love to have you. I'll pay for lunch and what all else.

Scoop, I'm not underpacking it, trust me, some of the strands were over 1/2 inch above the top of the bowl.

Mech, I found that the failsafe for smoking Orange Soda was to acclimate longer, then I was able to put the right amount of heat on without burning it. It wasnt a pleasant smoke, kinda tasted like bad sweet orange soda, icky. Yea, it was the heavy feeling that my lungs just wanted to purge this stuff as fast as possible. I dunno, seems to me like I wasnt doing anything wrong. BUT, I'm open to the possibility that I was. I'll keep the horchata out tonight and see if that makes for a better smoke tomorrow. I'll use as little heat as possible while still getting ok smoke. We'll see.

Buy some easier to smoke shisha. I wouldn't try Tangiers again if it was given to me. A waste of money in my experience.

You packed it with mdl's how to? I have it in a link in my signature now for easy reference. This is how I have been packing my Phunnel since this tutorial went up. It works great for me. Use warm water no ice, even cool water is OK also. I get smoke straight away on my first set of coals, by 5 pulls, I am getting massive tasty clouds. Acclimating is very important as you already know. Don't give up, it took me a while to get it going good too, and once you do, there is no turning back. If you don't have a oyster fork to poke holes use one of these. This is what I use and it works great also and every household I think should have something like this.

When I poke the holes in, I go to the bottom of the bowl and then put the next set with the pointy things with one side in the middle of the 2 you just put in. Repeat pattern.

He is entitled to his own opinion as you are yours. 3/4 of the posts here arent helpful so what makes the difference. As for the Horchata, it will take a little more heat than the orange soda I have found. Also when you pack your bowl, when you think its packed enough, put a little more in there hehe.

What gives you the right to be so rude? Let me get this right, because I have tried 3 Tangiers flavors, 3 times each, following all the tips that have been given and none of the flavors were even tolerable, I am not allowed to voice my opinion? LOL Just because I don't like Tangiers I can't voice that opinion without being told to STFU? Learn some manners.
